Terence Clarke graduated BA (Hons I in Music) from Sydney University, taught Mathematics for a time before returning to theatre, in which he has worked as director and composer (mainly), actor and teacher (less), and pianist/MD and dramaturg (least). He has acted in English repertory, for Nimrod, and for then state theatre company of WA, where he was for over two years Associate Director. He was foundation Artistic Director of Newcastle‘s Hunter Valley Theatre Company, the first regional professional theatre company in Australia, and has been the Artistic Director of the Playwrights Conference and Head of Directing at NIDA. He has directed some 140 productions. He wrote the music for three musicals to Nick Enright’s book and lyrics: The Venetian Twins, Variations (winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for Drama, 1983), and Summer Rain. In 2007 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the performing arts as director, actor, writer, composer, and educator.
